Book Tag | 20 Questions

I was tagged in the 20 questions book tag by the wonderful Taiwo last week, but as I’ve been rushed off my feet at work this is the first time I’m sat down at a computer long enough to give you all some decent answers! Thanks, Taiwo for tagging me ❤

1. How many books are too many books in a series?

Image result for the song of ice and fire

I think it really depends on the series and how long each book is? I have happily read series of about 6-7 books, but something like ASOIAF is waaayyyy too long for me. I read the first 5 books in a row and by the time I got to A Dance with Dragons 1 I was too burned out and never picked the series up again!

2. How do you feel about cliffhangers?

Related image

Oh boy, do I love a good cliffhanger. Obviously there’s a part of me that feels irritated to hell that I can’t know immediately what’s going to happen, but the bigger part of enjoys the thrill of being kept on tenterhooks until I can get my hands on the next book. A book without a good cliffhanger at the end just isn’t as exciting tbh.

3. Hardcopy or Paperback

Although I’ve written a post about ebooks versus physical books, I haven’t yet weight in on the hardback versus paperback debate. Although I do love how pretty hardbacks look on a bookshelf, they are way too expensive and impractical for me to read. As I have joint pain in my hands, I find bearing the weight of the hardback very difficult and much prefer paperbacks because of this. Also, they are much cheaper and this is an important factor for me.

4. Favourite Book

There’s no way that I could choose only one, so instead here are my favourite three books of all time. The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and the Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

5. Least Favourite Book

Another one that’s far too hard to just choose one for! I absolutely can’t stand The Catcher in the Rye; When We Were Orphans was incredibly boring; Ready, Player, One just had so many elements that I hated in it; I found Tell the Wolves I’m Home had very poor representation of gay men in it; and Boy, Snow, Bird was not only boring for the most part but ended on a very transphobic note.

6. Love Triangles Yes or No

I don’t think love triangles are innately bad. In the case of cheating love triangles they can sometimes be written really well and to be honest, it does happen in real life so on that level it’s definitely realistic. However, I’m sick to death of love triangles in YA fiction. Too often they spoil the book entirely, are really boring and badly written! Other types of love triangles, which err more towards one person with 2 people they love are also things that I can enjoy. Many of us have been there, attraction usually not a one person only rule. But again, it’s often written so badly that it just becomes groan-worthy when it crops up.

7. The Most Recent Book You Just Couldn’t Finish

I had really been looking forward to Zadie Smith’s Feel Free which I got as an e-ARC on Netgalley. However, the book really didn’t gel with me at all. I found the writing very overly verbose and got bored with it very quickly.

8. A Book You’re Currently Reading

9. Last Book You Recommended To Someone

10. Oldest Book You’ve Read

As a History graduate, I have read quite a lot of old books. I’m not 100% certain what the oldest book I’ve ever read is, but the most recent old book I read was The Kennel Club Stud Book Vol. 1: 1850-74 edited by F. Pearce and published in 1874. I read the original copy at the Kennel Club Library in London.

11. Newest Book You’ve Read

12. Favourite Author

It’s really hard choosing a favourite author as I don’t always stick to the same authors books, but if I had to choose authors whose works I always enjoy it would be Becky Chambers, Madeleine Miller and Benjamin Alire Saenz.

13. Buying Books or Borrowing Books

I do love buying books. I love displaying books on my shelves, being able to re-read them whenever I want and experiencing the joy of just having books which are mine to enjoy. But, book buying can also be very costly when all the books add up and this often makes me very anxious. I don’t have a lot of surplus money so buying books really is a luxury for me and I’m always paranoid about wasting money if I don’t like the book.

My local library is amazing and I find that I spend more time reading library books than any other kinds of books. I’m incredibly lucky that they always have new YA releases and lots of diverse books so I find something I love every time I go back. Also, libraries being shut in London is an endemic problem and local residents have had to fight so hard to try to save their libraries. Everybody should be able to access free books, so it’s important to me to keep supporting them.

14. A Book You Dislike That Everybody Else Seems to Like

I don’t really have an answer for this one as I tend to erase the books I dislike from my mind, so I can’t actually think of any right now! The only one is 50 Shades but I feel like people are moving on and realizing that it’s terrible now.

15. Bookmarks or Dog Ears

No, no, no, no, no to putting marks or dog ears on books! I hate it so much, especially with library books. I like to try and keep my books in good condition. Seeing pages getting bent over or highlighted hurts my heart. Plus, you can some cute ass bookmarks.

16. A Book You Can Always Re-read

Although me and J.K have had a falling out in a big way over the past few years, I will not let the Death of the Author take away my love for OotP. It is still one of my favourite books and one I can keep coming back to without ever getting bored of it. There’s something just so familiar and comforting about it.

17. Can You Read Whilst Listening to Music

Image result for peaceful gif

can read whilst listening to music, but I really prefer not to. Books are written in a descriptive way to evoke images, emotions, and reactions all of their own. I find that having music on often interferes with my ability to experience a book, especially if you have a particularly catchy pop song come on in the middle of an intensely sad scene!

18. One POV or Multiple POVs

Image result for inside out gif

It really depends on how well the book is written, but I do quite like a good multiple POV book like ASOIAF and the Wayfarer Series. I personally feel like it makes the story way more dynamic, helps you get to know different characters and gives you multiple perspectives of the same thing or issue. Not everyone sees things the same and I think being able to experience a book through different eyes makes it much more realistic and enjoyable as long as it’s done right.

19. Do You Read A Book In One Sitting Or Over Multiple Days?

Image result for reading for days gif

I love a good reading session but 9/10 it will take me multiple days to read a book, even if it’s under 300 pages. I find taking my time with books really enhances the experience and allows me to enjoy things properly, whereas if I crash through it too fast I lose a lot of the pacing and feelings. Plus, I read too slowly to ever finish books in one sitting and am too busy to read for an entire day!

20. A Book You’ve Read Because of the Cover

I don’t usually tag people in these but I’ll tag a few book blogging friends. If you’re not included then consider yourself tagged anyway 😉
