I was planning on posting up a review today because it has been so long since I’ve posted one but have had a really difficult day. Instead, I was inspired by Fay’s 5 Star TBR prediction post and decided to do one based around my July and August haul of YALC books, ARCs, gifts, and charity shop finds!
Haul
I usually don’t ever bother doing haul posts because I never accumulate enough books within a month to make them worth doing, but this July and August have been an entirely different story! The combination of attending YALC (where I acquired 17 books) and Nine Worlds (7), along with receiving some fantastic gifts and charity shop finds (4) meant that I gained 28 books across the two months! Before I move onto my 5-star predictions, here’s what I hauled.
5 Star Predictions
Record of a Spaceborn Few (Wayfarer #3) by Becky Chambers
I’m sure it’s of surprise to no one that I predict Record of a Spaceborn Few to be a 5 star read. So far, I have adored both of the Wayfarer books and this series holds a special place in my heart. I imagine that RofSF will definitely live up to my expectations if not surpass them!
The Djinn Falls in Love & Other Stories Anthology
I have wanted to read this ever since I saw it on someone’s TBR for the Ramadan Readathon this year and have only heard excellent things about it. I love anthologies and I love stories about Djinn, so I imagine that I will love this a lot too. Once again, massive shoutout to the Rebellion Publishing team for sending me this ❤
I am having an absolute whale of a time at the moment with all of the great fiction I’ve been reading and/or playing that involve AI’s so I can’t wait to read Lifel1k3. I’ve seen some great reviews of it from fellow book bloggers and I really enjoyed the Illuminae Files which Jay co-wrote with Amie Kaufman, so I am expecting good things from this.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
Another book that has been on my TBR list for a while now and one that I was absolutely ecstatic to find in a local charity shop. I am very, very excited about all of the amazing fantasy I’ve read this year which was written by people of colour and featuring people of colour as the main protagonists of the book. I’m sure that An Unkindness of Ghosts will join that list.
I have been a complete trash bag who hasn’t yet gotten around to reading any of Nnedi’s books, but I fell in love with her contribution to Star Wars: From another Point of View which I read last year. Since then, I haven’t been able to move for all of the amazing praise on the internet that surrounds Nnedi and her writing so I can’t wait to get started. I have been eyeing Lagoon up as my first potential Nnedi book as I am all about water themed books and managed to pick up a copy at YALC. No doubt this is going to smash my 5 star prediction!
Some of the other hauled books I’ve really looking forward to reading include:
- Uncanny Magazine Issue 23 – Dinosaur Themed Issue which looks AMAZING. I have wanted to read Uncanny Magazine for ages and there was no way I would resist a dinosaur themed issue!
- Ariadnis and Anassa by Josh Martin
- The Last Namsara by Kristen Cicarelli
- Handsome Heroes and Vile Villains: Masculinity in Disney’s Animated Features by Amy Davis
- The Extinction Trials by S.M Wilson
🌻 Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? 🌻

I’ve heard great things about The Knife of Never Letting Go & Red Sister, I hope you enjoy them!
I’ve also heard great things about Record of a Spaceborn Few, I honestly don’t know why I haven’t started reading the books yet!
Happy reading, Avery!

One day… one day you will read the Wayfarer books :’) I picked up Red Sister solely on having heard lots of good things about it, so I’m excited to see what I think

The Chaos Walking series was a bookish wish someone granted me which was amazing. I really enjoy Patrick Ness’ writing so excited to see what the series is like!

Awesome haul! 😀 I loved the Chaos Walking trilogy, although I didn’t really think the second book was as good as the first and third. Still a great series overall though! I am dying to get my hands on The Extinction, it sounds so good. I hope all of your five star predictions come true!

I managed to get the Extinction Trials for free as well from the publishers when I was at YALC in a completely unexpected way so I was VERY pleased. It sounds so, so interesting!

I have read only one story from the Uncanny Dinosaur Issue and you reminded me I really need to read the rest, I love that premise a lot.
An Unkindness of Ghosts is a heavy read, but it’s also a really intriguing book with unforgettable main characters. I had more mixed opinions on Lagoon – it didn’t help that I read a translated version and the translation wasn’t that good – but the marine horror aspect was awesome and my favorite thing about it.
I hope you end up liking them!

I’ve read Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor and it was great, so I can’t wait to pick up the other books. Probably the sequel first, and then maybe Binti.
