State of the ARC is a monthly meme at Avalinah’s Books meant to motivate you to finish up all your long overdue ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copies).
Welcome to the first State of the ARC of 2019 and, thanks to Destiny’s late-a-thon, my ARC reading is off to a pretty good start! I’ve also received some amazing ARCs recently so I’m very excited to see how my State of the ARC progresses throughout the year!
Current State of the ARC
Given that it’s the start of a new year, I’ve decided to start my State of the ARC graph from scratch to keep track of my current ARCs. Although it means my ratio of read to unread books doesn’t look as good at the moment, it means I’m not constantly trying to juggle 2017/2018 ARCs with 2018/2019 ARCs and getting the stats all confused! You might also notice that I’ve been receiving a lot more books directly from publishers which I’m over the moon about ✨
Read
Defy the Worlds by Claudia Gray – ★★★★☆
The late-a-thon was amazing for helping me tackle my ARCs that have been gathering dust on my Netgalley shelves since early last year. I finally finished Defy the Worlds and uploaded my review of the series so far
Free Chocolate by Amber Royer – DNF
I loved how much Free Chocolate looked and sounded, but unfortunately this book was just not for me. I felt quite guilty over DNFing it when I’d had it for so long but I think I made the right decision. If you’re interested, you can read my mini DNF review on Goodreads
Brave New Girls: Tales of Heroines Who Hack edited by Paige Daniels and Mary Fan – ★★★★☆
This is one ARC I had been meaning to read for a number of months but never got round to and was excited to read it for the late-a-thon. I love the concept behind the Brave New Girls series and enjoyed a lot of the stories in the Heroines Who Hack anthology. You can see my review of it here.
Tempests and Slaughter by Tamora Pierce – ★★★★★
I’m sure you’ve already seen me raving about how much I loved this book in my WWW Wednesday posts, but in case you missed it let me tell you that I loved it a whole bunch more than I ever expected. I want to get my own copy of this and need the next book in the series ASAP please ❤ Review to come in a few days!
The Science of Science Fiction by Mark Brake – DNF?
I’m still dithering over whether to DNF this or not. I think it is pretty likely that I will have to DNF it as I’m just not enjoying reading it and I don’t want to persevere only to give it a bad rating at the end.
Acquired
You Asked for Perfect by Laura Silverman (Author/Publisher)
These days I don’t tend to read many contemporary books, but when I saw the author announcing ARCs for this I looked into the book and requested an ARC as it deals with a lot of issues that I have faced and continue to deal with. I’ve seen some great reviews of this and will also be doing a Q&A with Laura just after You Asked for Perfect is published!
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling (Edelweiss)
Another genre that I don’t typically read, but I love the look and the sound of The Luminous Dead. I’ve been wanting to branch out and dip my toes a little into horror and The Luminous Dead provides a great cross-over between Sci-Fi and Horror.
Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (Publisher)
You all would have laughed so hard if you could have seen my reaction when I got up one morning to discover the shiny, shiny package from the publisher and opened it up to find an ARC of Aurora Rising. I cannot tell you how ecstatic I am over this and I feel super honored to have an ARC of this ❤
As well as these three ARCs that I have already received, I will be receiving an ARC of Summer Bird Blue in a few days and appearing on its UK Blog Tour in April. I could honestly cry because you all should know how much I love Akemi Dawn Bowman and how patiently I’ve waited for SBB’s UK release!!
I’m really looking forward to the next few months in terms of ARCs as I have some great ones lined up. Later on in February I’ll be reviewing The Outcast Hours, A Memory Called Empire and You Asked for Perfect. March has turned out to be a jam packed month with The Outcast Hours blog tour, You Asked for Perfect Q&A, New Suns and The Luminous Dead Review, and The Wicked Saints blog tour. I can’t wait!
I’d love to hear how your first month went. Did you take part in the late-a-thon? How many ARCs did you manage to knock out or did you suffer from the dreaded reading slump that has been haunting many book bloggers this month.
I’m jealous of how many books you receive from publishers but also stoked that you’re able to get so many as a non-US blogger! Looks like you have some great reads ahead of you. 🙂

As always, your State of the ARC is going much better than mine! You’ll have to let me know what you think of AURORA RISING because I’m not sure if I want to read it or not, but it sounds amazing. Great post!! ❤

Good job with Late-a-thon! I wound up with a 21 reading slump so… I didn’t get anything accomplished myself. Ugh, now February is my own personal Late-a-Thon!

Hope your February late-a-thon is working out, Feb has definitely been ‘new release-a-thon for me’ as I’m trying to avoid piling up anymore overdue ARCs
