State of the ARC | #9 Taking a Step Back

State-of-the-ARC

State of the ARC is a monthly meme at Avalinah’s Books meant to motivate you to finish up all your long overdue ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copies).

This month I only read 2 ARCs (Wicked Saints and Summer Bird Blue) and I’m currently reading one of my really overdue ARCs (American Hippo). I really need a break from ARCs as I feel like they have completely dominated my TBR over the past few months so I haven’t been focusing as much on them as much. Plus I haven’t been requesting any new ARCs to help give myself a breather, make time for backlist books and catch up on some of those ARCs that are still overdue.

American Hippo by Sarah Gailey

I was unbelievably lucky with Tor sending me a review copy of American Hippo, promptly psyched myself out and then didn’t review it when I received it. Over the weekend a friend gave me some helpful spoilers about Taste of Marrow, the second novella included in this collection, so naturally I had to pick it up as soon as I got home!

Next month I have 3 ARCs due, two graphic novels and one is Aurora Rising so I should manage to read all of them. After that I’m definitely taking a break from ARCs, although I love them and I am so, so, so grateful to be lucky enough to receive them, they are also quite stressful and I would love to read some books without feeling under pressure to review them!

How did your ARC reading go for April? Are there any you’re looking forward to picking up in May?

  1. I didn’t advance my ARC pile at all this month, mainly because I fell into a slump and work and school completely took over. Next month I have 7 ARCs due (pray for me) but after that I’m taking a BIG BREAK TOO! best of luck to you in the month of may! 🌸

      1. Thanks for the positivity! I have banned myself from requesting more on NetGalley until I finish reading at least 5 or 6 more of my already requested books 😂

  2. I have two nonfiction ARCs on nonbinary people that I’m curious to read, so maybe I’ll get to them in May. But I absolutely get the stress 😦

  3. I think I only have two ARCs, but I feel ya on the stress. I do have about 6 other review requests and it feels like it’s taking me forever to get caught up on them because I’ve been mood reading lately.

    1. I always have such difficulty with the reviews… I either end up only being able to read one or two a month with reviews following up shortly after, OR read a lot more but then have a huge stack of reviews waiting to be written >.>

      1. Yes, this exactly. I still have 5 reviews from way earlier in the year in my folder. I’ve been trying my best (since I got behind) to try and keep up with them as I finish each book now but sometimes I just want to jump right into the next book! And then things pile up again. 😅
