State of the ARC is a monthly meme at Avalinah’s Books meant to motivate you to finish up all your long overdue ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copies)
If you read my August wrap up you’ll already know that August was pretty much a complete non-event for me for blogging and reading. If you didn’t already know then you do now! Although I knew I wouldn’t have much time for reading in August, I had still hoped to have enough time to read 3 ARCs but didn’t get round to reading any of them. In addition to not reading any ARCs, I also broke my ARC request ban in a moment of dissertation induced weakness… So yeah, August sure was a time.
Read/Currently Reading
None!
Obviously, I haven’t read any ARCs yet so I can’t start filling out part 2 of the bingo card BUT I am very excited to start filling it in soon. Thank you to Evalina for making these exciting bingos ❤
Acquired
Mooncakes by Wendy Ku and Suzanne Walker
I’ve been so good with not requesting ARCs lately but couldn’t resist requesting this adorable YA queer graphic novel that everyone has been talking about. It sounds like it has bucketloads of fantastic rep and sounds like the perfect squish I need right now.
Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia E. Butler, adapted by Damian Duffy & illustrated by John Jennings
I have been intending to read my first Butler but just kept not getting round to it. When I saw this graphic novel adaptation of Parable of the Sower, I thought it would be a perfect introduction to Butler’s work and great graphic novel to review
SLAY by Brittney Morris
Fuck, I am SO excited for SLAY and can’t wait to dive into my ARC of it. It’s a fantastic YA debut from Morris about young, black MMORPG players, racism, anti-Black violence and a young girl fighting to protect her identity.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
This is a bit of a wildcard ARC for me that I decided to take a chance on after it caught my eye on Netgalley. It’s a Japanese SF/F book about a little cafe that allows customers to travel back in time and is about the touching journeys of 4 particular customers who must return back to the present before the coffee gets cold…
Harley in the Sky by Akemi Dawn Bowman
I am so stoked to read my ARC of Akemi’s next book, Harley in the Sky. I’m on the street team for it but have sadly not been able to take part as much as I would have liked to so far. I am very much looking forward to reading the book though and sharing it with you all ❤
To summarise: I have read 0 ARCs in August, gained 5, behind on 5 ARC reviews, and have a total of 16 ARCs I need to read. It’s not the worst state my ARC pile has ever been in but it’s definitely something I want to curb before it gets anymore out of control (which is proving tough bc there are so many amazing books coming out). How’s your state of the ARC going, are there any new releases I should be keeping my eyes peeled for?
Mooncakes looks so good! And Slay – every time I look at the cover I just want to read it even more!
