WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:
What are you currently reading/playing?
What did you recently finish reading/playing?
What do you think you’ll read/play next?
Hey everyone! It has been a chaotic 2 weeks since my last WWW Wednesday post. On Monday I submitted my dissertation for my MRes which has been taking up about 99% of my time so I am super glad to have finally submitted it and be able to move onto my PhD. I’m having a bit of a reading dilemma this week so I hope you’ll stick around to offer your thoughts and advice this week ❤
Currently Reading/Playing
On the Come Up was one of my most anticipated releases of 2019 and, friends, I am struggling with it. Despite being so busy this month I’d been powering through my reads but this has brought me to a standstill. I loved THUG and there are certain elements of this that I’ve enjoyed (the raps in particular) but I am *not* loving this. For me, I’m really struggling with Bri, the MC, as well as aspects of the writing and there’s just not something sticking with this one. Did anyone else feel like that with OtCU?
I decided it felt like the right kind of time to pick up A Monster Calls last week as well and have been having a lot more success with it than OtCU. The illustrations by Jim Kay are the reason I wanted to read the book after I watched the film and they are *stunning*. I had to set it aside for a little bit due to difficult anniversaries last week but I’m hoping to be able to finish it by the end of this month (which is almost here already???)
As I could see the light at the end of my dissertation tunnel, I thought it’d be a good time to pick BoTW back up although it had been a few months since I had first started to play so decided to just restart the game as I’d forgotten how to play it :’). I’m at a bit of an annoying bit at the moment where I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing though so have mostly been wandering around gathering resources and killing goblins.
Recently Finished
As I got stuck on my other two books I’ve only managed to read one book in the last 2 weeks but I steamed through this autobiography by Mineko Iwasaki and loved it! It felt so nice to read Mineko’s story through her own words rather than through the version that had been told without her full consent. If you like Memoirs of a Geisha (or even if you don’t) then I definitely recommend this.
Next Read/Play
As I’m continuing the theme of mood reading this month I have no ideas of what I’m going to read next, although I would like to finish A Monster Calls. Then it’s back to the TBR grind at the start of October in an attempt to pack in the last few books for the year.
So sorry to hear about On The Come Up! I haven’t read it yet – and, with everything happening, I’m not even sure if I own a copy? Ugh. – but I have such high hopes for it since I loved THUG.. Guess I’ll be checking out some other reviews before deciding to pick it up or no.
Hope you’re okay, Avery! ❤

Sorry to hear OTCU wasn’t a good fit. I hadn’t heard of that one til now, but it’s always disappointing when a highly anticipated book just doesn’t work out.

Sorry to hear that you are not loving OtCU. I haven’t read it yet, but I didn’t really love THUG as much as everyone else so I’ve been on the fence about reading Angie’s new book. It’s always sad when you don’t love a highly anticipated book. I am happy to hear that you are enjoying A Monster Calls. I loved the book and the movie. I love the illustrations so much. They are so amazingly done.

Is MIneko Iwasaki the geisha whose story Arthur Golding appropriated for Memoirs of a Geisha, or someone different? It sounds like a great book!

I thought I responded to this, I’m sorry! Yes, she was one of the main (if not the main) one I think.
