WWW Wednesday | 30th April 2019

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:

What are you currently reading/playing?
What did you recently finish reading/playing?
What do you think you’ll read/play next?

I managed to get a surprising amount read within the last week thanks to my last push for the OWLs Readathon and I’ve already made an early start on some of my May reading as its the only thing keeping my brain vaguely sane while I battle an essay for my Masters.

Currently Reading/Playing

aurora rising

oooooohhhhhhhh myyyyyyyyy gooooooddddddddd. I started reading Aurora Rising on Monday as its publication date is almost upon us and it is so freaking good. Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman always know how to make me smile with their terrible chaotic good space squads. I’m also deeply intrigued by all of the ~space mystery~ going on and want to devour the whole book whole.

No updates on the video game front as I’ve been too busy to play anymore of Divinity, but I did play D&D on Monday night which was ace. We are currently playing the Curse of Strahd campaign and have been having a lot of fun with all of the spoopy encounters.

After squeeing over River of Teeth, the first novella in this collection, with a friend during Easter Con, I was in a major mood to read the rest of the American Hippo collection so I did! I feel a little bit guilty as I was supposed to read Emily Eternal so I could write the review in time for its publication last week but really needed a break from new release ARCs. Plus, American Hippo is technically a review copy that I needed to read for review from last year anyway!

After reading the two American Hippo short stories at the end of the book, I went in search of some more short stories published by Tor on their website and found ‘Circus Girl, the Hunter, Mirror Boy‘ by JY Yang which was a very interesting short about a young girl whose reflection disappears and is replaced by ‘mirror boy’. I also read the short ‘STET‘ by Sarah Gailey as part of my Hugo Award Finalists reading list.

Next Read/Play

May

I kick-started Moody May a little bit early as I was so ready for some mood reads and will be continuing this all throughout May. It’s been so refreshing to pick up a book that’s been calling to me rather than planning everything that I will read in a month and I’ve been having a lot of fun so far.

On the video game front, I’m not sure I will get much time for gaming as I’m in the middle of writing my essay and will be going back to uni next week so things are probably going to be getting pretty busy again for me!

What have you been reading/playing this week?

  1. This week I’m reading Furyborn by Claire Legrand and also want to read the sequel as I have an arc. I’m really loving it and can’t wait to read more!
Happy reading with Aurora Rising, I can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

  2. I’m so nervous about reading Aurora Rising, because I wasn’t really that into Illuminae or really anything Jay Kristoff. I tried to read Nevernight and ended up DNF it. I still keep giving him a chance though for some reason HAHA. Guess we’ll see what happens when I get my copy of Aurora Rising. Happy to see you’re really liking it though!

    1. I haven’t read anything solely written by him yet, only The Illuminae Files which I loved. This is quite like The Illuminae Files but told as more of a straight up novel (rather than with all of the format stuff in TIFs), similar young protagonists (rag-tag bunch) but with more diverse rep than there was in TIFs which has been nice to see! It also reminds me quite a lot of Battlestar Galactica

      1. I can’t decide between Fin and Kal. I think Fin is a riot, I mean he wants to jump in bed with EVERYONE, lol. But Kal is such an interesting character too. Really, I love all of them!
