State of the ARC | #11

State of the ARC is a monthly meme at Avalinah’s Books meant to motivate you to finish up all your long overdue ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copies).

Similarly to May, I had not planned on reading many ARCs but this time it turned out well for me rather than being a repeat disaster of last month. For the Sims-a-thon, I had given myself a selection of 3 books per category to choose from and some of these included ARCs. More often than not, I found myself choosing to read an ARC over a non-ARC which was helpful for continuing to tackle my ARC backup.

This month, I read 3 ARCs (2 new and 1 overdue). Although that doesn’t sound like a lot it is still great progress for my state of the ARC, meaning that I now only have 11 left to go! Apart from The Tea Dragon Festival (because honestly, how could I miss the opportunity to read an ARC of it?!), I have stuck to my promise of not requesting any more new ARCs!

Don’t Touch My Hair by Emma Dabiri – ★★★★★

I have a lot of love for Emma Dabiri, she is one of my favourite academics and I felt super honored to read an ARC of this. I’m looking forward to reviewing it in the next few days (fingers crossed).

 

 

The Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O’Neill – ★★★★★

I am still screaming over being approved for an ARC of The Tea Dragon Festival. I loved the first book and Festival also made my heart so full. These books are just so warming and happy making.

 

Lost Gods by Micah Yongo – ★★★★☆

Lost Gods was one of my overdue ARCs from last summer so I definitely wanted to make time for it this month. Overall I enjoyed it and rounded up my 3.5 star rating as it’s Yongo’s debut novel, but I found the book a little underwhelming. I’ll be posting a review for this soon though so you can check out my thoughts then.

 

State of the ARC Bingo

I believe it’s the last month for the first half of the State of the ARC Bingo 2019 and I am super proud of myself for getting a full house. Whilst I really love bingo sheets, I find them quite hard to fill in as I read quite slowly so I’m very pleased to have finished this one. It’s also great to look at some of the fantastic ARCs that I’ve read in the first half of 2019.

Since I took a step back from ARCs and took a more relaxed approach to reading (and blogging tbh), I’ve been enjoying books a lot more again. As I mentioned at the start of the post, when given the choice I ended up choosing to read an ARC rather than feeling under so much pressure to read and review an ARC that it put me off of reading altogether. Although it can be difficult to resist clicking that ‘request’ button, I think heavily restricting my ARC requests has also massively improved my relationship with ARCs so if you’re really struggling with ARCs right now maybe give it a try too.
